Official Gritball League

The Official Gritball League (OGL) is a design study of a fictitious sports league for a made-up game called Gritball. In this study, I use a branding system to explore each teams’ individual identity and look while keeping them all in cohesion with one another.
In this case study, I dive into each teams’ identity through logo design, color, uniform, and apparel. In addition to each team, I designed a league website where each team can be found, living under the umbrella design system.
Inspiration
As you may know, Basketball was invented by Dr. James Naismith in 1891 as an alternative sport to keep his pupils active during the winter months. Combining his knowledge of Rugby, Lacrosse, and a childhood game known as “duck a rock”, the sport of basketball was created.
Drawing inspiration from Dr. Naismith, a few life-long friends and I have formulated a game known as “Gritball”. This game borrows fundamentals and player motions from sports such as handball, football, basketball, hockey, lacrosse, and soccer. The sport was to be a hybrid of the activities we’ve grown accustomed to.
The Game
Gritball is a close-quartered game played by two teams, varying from three to five players on each team, on a 60ft by 30ft rectangular field. The object of the game is to score more goals than the opposing team by using your hands to throw the gritball into the other teams’ goal. The game begins with a tip-off at midfield, where one player from each team attempts to gain possession. There are no restrictions to how you can move with the ball or pass the ball to your teammates. However, you are forbidden from kicking the ball at any time.
Contact is permitted in this game in order to play defense or gain possession of the ball. Defending teams are allowed to enter their respective goal crease, but the offense is unable to step foot in the crease without drawing a foul.

The Seabandits embody Gritball by taking on the persona as the OGL’s toughest and rowdiest team.
